The knee-jerk reflex (also called the patellar reflex) is an automatic response that occurs when the patellar tendon just below the kneecap is tapped.
This tap stretches the tendon, stimulating sensory neurons which send impulses to the spinal cord.
The spinal cord immediately sends a signal through motor neurons back to the thigh muscles, causing them to contract and the leg to kick forward.
This process happens without the involvement of the brain and is therefore an example of a simple (spinal) reflex action.
